Housing Choice Voucher Program

McAllen Housing Commission administers both the Housing Choice Voucher Program (formerly known as Section 8) and the Public Housing Program.

The Housing Choice Voucher Program is a federally funded program that provides rental assistance to eligible individuals and families through approximately 1,348 vouchers - enabling them to secure affordable, quality housing in diverse neighborhoods throughout McAllen.

Through the HCV Program, McHC pays a portion of eligible participants’ monthly rent. These payments are made directly to the property owner. The participant then pays the landlord a portion of the rent (the difference between the rent charged by the landlord and the amount subsidized by the program) based on approximately 30% of their monthly household income.

Participants can use their vouchers to rent a house or apartment from private property owners throughout McAllen. This program helps families realize their potential and cultivate their personal, economic, and social skills to support the transition from subsidized to non-subsidized housing.
