Veteran Assistance Supportive
Housing (VASH) Program
The Veteran Assistance Supportive Housing (VASH) Program is a program that provides HUD Housing Choice Voucher (HCV) rental assistance to homeless veterans. Additionally, it offers case management and clinical services through the Department of Veteran Affairs (VA) at its medical centers and in the community.
The HUD VASH vouchers are governed by the regulations of the HCV rental assistance program (24 CFR 982). Through this program, the Public Housing Authority (PHA) provides monthly rental assistance to eligible families to help them afford decent, safe, and sanitary housing. HUD provides the necessary funding for the program to the PHA. The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) will refer HUD VASH-eligible families to the PHA for voucher issuance.
Eligible participants for the HUD VASH program are homeless veterans who are required to engage in VA Case Management. The program is administered by the McAllen Housing Commission (McHC) in conjunction with VA locations within their jurisdiction. Homeless veterans who may be eligible for the program should reach out to their local VA case manager for more information.
